Modbus<\/span> Organization Replaces<\/span> Master<\/span>–<\/span>Slave<\/span> with Client<\/span>–<\/span>Server<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>
July<\/span> 9<\/span>, 20<\/span>20<\/span> \u2014<\/span> The Modbus Organization<\/span> Board of Trustees announces it<\/span> is <\/span>expunging<\/span> all<\/span> occurrences of<\/span> inappropriate language of the<\/span> query<\/span> and\u00a0 response paradigm of Modbus<\/span> communications.<\/span> With recent<\/span> events,<\/span> all <\/span>companies and individuals<\/span> with the ability to make<\/span> positive c<\/span>hange<\/span>s<\/span> should<\/span> do\u00a0 so.<\/span> As the holder of the standard for<\/span> an<\/span> industrial network with one of<\/span> the<\/span> largest installed base<\/span>s<\/span> in th<\/span>e world<\/span>,<\/span> it<\/span> is<\/span> important to<\/span> complete the <\/span>replace<\/span>ment of<\/span> the current<\/span> terminology with more thoughtful reference<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span> A<\/span>ll\u00a0 instances of “master<\/span>–<\/span>slave” in<\/span> the<\/span> organization’s<\/span> literature and on its website\u00a0 will be removed.<\/span> Current electronic content<\/span> is being<\/span> update<\/span>d as of this\u00a0 annou<\/span>ncement<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> Board Chair Todd Snide commented,<\/span> “<\/span>The time is overdue<\/span> for\u00a0 these words to be removed. The<\/span> terms are unnecessary and<\/span> insensitive<\/span> to the\u00a0 people<\/span> who experience<\/span> racism<\/span> in this country and<\/span> around the world<\/span>. We urge\u00a0 our member<\/span> companies<\/span> and all those who use the Modbus protocol to<\/span> take\u00a0 similar action to rid their documentation and communications of these terms.”<\/span><\/span> The organization is<\/span> using<\/span> “client<\/span>–<\/span>server” to describe<\/span> Modbus<\/span> communications<\/span>,<\/span> characterized by<\/span> communication between c<\/span>lient device<\/span> (s)<\/span>, which initiates\u00a0 communication and makes requests of<\/span> server device<\/span>(s)<\/span>, which process\u00a0 request<\/span>s<\/span> and return an appropriate response (or error message).<\/span><\/span> About\u00a0 Modbus<\/span>–<\/span>Organization, Inc.<\/span><\/span> Headquartered in Massachusetts, the Modbus\u00a0 Organization is an association of users and<\/span> suppliers of<\/span> control and <\/span>automation devices.
